What trim is for, what kief actually is, and why the people who know what they’re doing start here.

Ask someone who has been making their own edibles or salves for years what they buy, and it is rarely the pretty flower. It is trim, and sometimes kief.

Trim

Trim is the leaf material removed during trimming. It still carries cannabinoids and terpenes — just at lower concentration than the flower, in a form nobody would photograph. If your plan is to decarboxylate and infuse into butter or oil, the flower’s appearance is irrelevant and you are paying a premium for it.

Buying trim instead is the single biggest cost saving available to anyone infusing at home.

Kief

Kief is the opposite end of the same process. Trichomes — the resin glands carrying the cannabinoids and terpenes — are sifted off the plant material through a screen. What is left is a fine pale powder that is almost entirely the active part of the plant, with the leaf and stem taken away.

It is concentrated, so it goes a long way. People sprinkle it over a bowl, add it to a preroll, or use it to make a far smaller batch of infusion than trim would require.

Why source still matters here

It is tempting to assume that once material is destined for infusion, provenance stops mattering. It is the reverse. Trim and kief concentrate whatever was on the plant, including anything it was sprayed with. Ours comes off flower grown in natural soil with OMRI-listed inputs on a hill in Cabot, and it is the same crop as the flower on the rest of this site — not a by-product bought in from a field we have never walked.
