A hemp plant does not produce one uniform grade of flower. The top of the plant gets the most direct sun all season and puts out the largest, densest, most resinous colas. Further down, in the shade of the canopy, the flower is smaller and airier.
Sorting the tops out means deliberately taking the best part of the harvest out of the rest of the flower, so we price them separately rather than averaging them in.
What you get
Tops are denser, so an ounce of flower tops is physically less volume than an ounce of mixed flower. They are usually more aromatic and visibly frostier. For anyone who cares how the flower looks and smells before anything else happens to it, this is the grade to buy.
If you are grinding it anyway, you do not need tops. Buy the hand-trimmed flower and keep the difference.
